Bringing Lights to Rural Areas

Nearly 300 million people living in rural India are still using primitive sources of energy like kerosene and wood-fired stoves, which expose them to life-threatening diseases and exacerbate environmental problems, and 400 million Indians live in darkness after the sunsets. They live in villages which are not connected to the power  grid as they are too remote and often located in mountains and inaccessible areas.

Problems faced by the people

The downside of not having light:

  • Education suffers as kids cannot read once it is dark.

  •  Kerosene lamps results in injury and deaths. Also Buying kerosene costs them 20%  of their income.

  • Lifestyles are impacted as work needs to finish before sunset.

  •  The villagers continue to live in the 19th century as they have minimal access to  information and news around them .

Solution

•Street Light implementation

•Implementation of solar panels

Companies like Selco, a solar energy company has installed the lights in 2003.  Since its founding in 1995, Selco, based in Bangalore, India’s technology hub,  has provided 100,000 homes with solar lighting systems, mostly in the surrounding state of Karnataka.

  1. We can make a collaboration with them to  we can propose a foundation model.

  2. We can bring light to each of these families at a cost of just 820 INR per  home and 1300 for street light.

  3. Fund 8200 INR & light up 10 homes for 3-5 years.

  4. This campaign aims to raise INR 66000.
